A Line in the Sand

He drew a line in the sand and said “We can walk this path together. You and I. Side by side… as long as you don’t fall in love with me, for if you do, you’ll find us on opposite ends. I can give you everything you desire… everything you require… but please don’t ask me to love you.”

I shrugged it off. I imagined somewhere down the line he’d realize loving me, was what he was made to do. I took his hand but the further we walked, the more his hand began to slip from my grip. The more I loved, the more he pulled. The closer I came, the more distance he put between us.

I eventually found my foolish self alone… just staring at that line in the sand.

I was finally seeing it for what it really was… a wall.
